Ember does less than most software of its kind. This page describes exactly what, verified against the app itself rather than written to sound reassuring.

Not collected

Your clipboard history is not transmitted to or stored on our servers. The sync service has no endpoint that accepts it and no table that could hold it. Content a password manager marks as concealed is not read at all.

Only with an account

• Email address and a hashed password.
• Palettes — only if you share them.
• Projects, and the image files inside them — only while signed in.

No analytics, no telemetry

There is no third-party SDK in the app, no crash reporting. The one thing recorded about an upgrade is which feature prompted it, carried on a link you clicked, attached to a purchase that already happened. Nothing is recorded about anyone who doesn't buy.

Who the app talks to

• Our sync service, only while you are signed in.
• Apple, when you buy or renew.
• The update feed.
• Any URL you type into Import, yourself.

Sub-processors

• Cloudflare — this website, the sync service, and the database and file storage behind it.
• Apple — merchant of record for purchases. Ember never sees a card.

What is changing

Ember is moving to the App Store, and syncing moves with it: palettes and projects will travel through your own iCloud account rather than a server of ours. When that lands, the account and password above stop existing and the storage becomes Apple's under your Apple ID.

This page describes Ember as it is today, not as it will be. It will be updated on the day that changes, not before.

Retention and deletion

Nothing is kept to a schedule of ours. What sits on the server is there because your account is:

• Your account — email and a hashed password — for as long as the account exists.
• Sign-in sessions — 60 days, then they expire on their own.
• Shared palettes and synced projects — for as long as you keep them.
• Project images — until no project of yours refers to them any more, at which point the file is removed from storage.
• Your clipboard history — never reaches us at all, so there is nothing here to keep or to delete.

One honest detail about deleting a palette or a project: it goes from every device, and the server keeps a record that it existed and was deleted. That marker is what stops another Mac of yours, offline at the time, from cheerfully putting it back. The content goes; the fact of it having been there is what makes deletion stick across machines.

You can delete your account from inside Ember — Settings → Account → Delete account. It happens immediately and takes everything with it: the account row, every palette and project on the server, the image files stored with them, and the palette histories behind them. There is no waiting period and nothing is kept back. If you would rather ask us to do it, write to [ PLACEHOLDER: privacy@typofire.example ] from the address on the account.

One thing deleting the account does not do: cancel a subscription. Apple holds that, so it carries on renewing until you cancel it in your Apple account.

Everything you have made stays on your Mac either way. File → Export Library writes the whole thing to a single file whenever you want it, and deleting the account does not touch it.
